Love

Love is a vicious motivator.

The Bible, specifically Corinthians 13: 4-7, would have you believe

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Don’t kid yourself.

Love is many things but gentle is not one of them. Love can cause a person to forgo all reason and rationality. Love is not controllable, it does not bend to your will, nor diminish at your discretion. Love happens whether you wish it to or not, as much based on your own individual biology and chemical makeup as it is on that of the one with whom you fall in love. Love can cause loyalty where none should exist.  Love can bind you more strongly to another than any conscious act of will.

Love can destroy your life.  More to the point, love can make you destroy your own life.

Love can cause irreparable psychological damage.

Love can of course also make you happy and have many positive impacts but who wants to write a post about that?  If I had started the post with ‘love is wonderful’ would you have kept reading?

  1. The conflict between theory and reality is movingly expressed. But don’t despair; love conquers all if you are very lucky, and it is a privilege just to have had the feeling.
